By using HRAFN’s innovative qrLogistic barcodes, and HRAFN Online Container for Truck device, SINTEF was able to conduct a live test of the monitoring of live temperature data from a meat transport. By recording of internal temperature and environmental temperature, the project showed how temperature could be recorded during the ongoing transport.

Norsk Lastbærerpool (Norwegian TransportItem Pool, NLP) has awarded HRAFN, Lexit Group and Telenor Objects the assignment for development and delivery of RFID Infrastructure for recording the movements of NLP’s RFID tagged plastic pallets.
NLP was established in 2006 as an organization for improving the environmental footprint of the logistics-operations in the Norwegian FMCG market. The organization is owned halv by the producers and half by the retailers in the Norwegian food-market. The industry is now replacing the wooden pallets with 1 million more durable and environmentally friendly RFID tagged plastic pallets. Four tags identifies the pallets globally using EPCGen2 tags with the GRAI identification schema. This transport item is the first in a row of new transport Items with RFID that NLP will implement into the Norwegian market. Up to 6 million tagged totes is already scheduled for the next few years. NLP will themselves use the tagging to record the flow of pallets, as well as improving visibility and handling efficiency in their operations centres. The customers of NLP will be allowed to, and encouraged to take the RTI’s ID into use throughout the whole supplychain. This utilization of the extra capabilities of the pallet is believed to generate a powerful network effect, causing the demand to grow extremely rapid.
It is common knowledge by the actors in the food chain that better visibility in the whole supply chain, will contribute to increased quality and less waste. Single pilots have been executed this supply chain before, but always lacking the inter-enterprise-wide angle of traceability information. The tagged pallets with their unique identifiers will enable the actors to look to one common identifier that can bring information and enable tracking of the products from producer and all the way towards the retail stores. By recording the movements of transport items like pallets and totes in a EPCIS based Information Infrastructure, the secrets of the supplychain and the history of the transported products, can be extracted. This will further more enable even better electronic traceability to be reported to the government-established, eTraceability project in Norway.
NLP has choosen a group of partners consisting of HRAFN as project manager and chief architect, Lexit Group as HW-vendor and system integrator and Telenor Ojects as communications platform vendor. The partners will deliver standardized solutions for covering key points in the supply chain like shipping and receiving of pallets. The solutions include portals, handhelds and also registration of movements into EPCIS both for internal use of the customer’s, and for use by the pallet pool to charge the pallet-users rental and handling costs for the pallet. Basically the Information Infrastructure will enable the participants to be a part of an Online Value Chain

Innovation Norway has granted HRAFN a startup-grant of 400k NOK. The funds is regarding development of the businessplan and securing funding for HRAFN’s innovative new value chains that is beeing planned. Payments are tied to milestones in the projects.
– These projects are central in our business plan, and we are pleased that Innovation Norway by this; really contributes to research and development and sees the potential of the future value chains we are building, says CEO Viktor Varan.
HRAFN and dLight has been working since january 2010 with d’light. d’light is a norwegian company that is handling the equipment need for concerts, festivals and other events. They are providing light, sound and stage equipment on a rental basis. d’light came to HRAFN after getting to know HRAFN’s reputation as the company of choice if one wants to create the future for oneself.
d’light and HRAFN has joined forces to create a concept for the whole rental industry, and the aim is to commercialize a turnkey solution that fully supports, and utilizes RFID enhanced processes for this vertical by the end of 2010.
This is an image of a crate with lots of equipment, cables and other items inside. Today inventory of this crate is done both when it is rented out and of course when it is returned. This is a time consuming job. RFID tags on each component here will significantly reduce the time beeing spent on inventory, and of course increase the data quality dramatically.
This project is of strategic importance to HRAFN as we see an increase in this type of applications. Both the angle that the rental business is reducing excess waste by increasing the use of each unit to a maximum, and the fact that the technology now is rapidly maturing regarding tagging special equipment, tools and other metal units.
The portal below is a prototype portal that is already built as this picture shows. It is developed to be a generic tool suitable for a variety of industrial and retail applications.
The next milestones in this project is choosing the design and functionality of the tags for cables. There are not a lot of tags that works well on cables today, so the project had to customize to a certain extent, the tags.

“RFID did not only solve the logistical problems we had, but also opened new possibilities we had not seen before. This is very exciting to take further”, says Managing Director Rune Sandve and Chief Logistics Officer Ken Andrè Mikkelborg in Bilglassgruppen AS.
Bilglassgruppen is the larges distributor of car glass. The company has 40 empliyees and a turnaround this year of 170 million NOK. BGG is doing paralell import directly from producers which gives advatageous prices. Paralellimport of car glass has about 80% of the norwegian market. Bilglassgruppen is largest in Norway with 42% market share and 60 000 windows a year. The company is owned by A.L. RIIS, who also owns Riis Bilgalss, the largest chain for car window repairs in norway.
We have a tradition of beeing in front of development. This is also true for logistics and computer systems. We believe in RFID technology and are now looking at the possibilities that opens up with this technology. It is inspiring to be a pioneèr and we see it as a great advantage for us when it comes to competency and for our customers to be a step in front of the rest with the solutions of tomorrow, Sandve says.
In te pilot that is executed in cooperation with HRAFN, RFID-tagging of windshields and equipment for mounting this (rubber seals, glue, etc.) has been tagged. HRAFN has been in charge of the execution of this pilot by delivery of the RFID infrastructure as a managed service, the user interfaces needed and the competency required for prooving the abilitys of this technology.

We will increase efficiency and quality on inventory, observe errors in the picking process before shipping and get better control of the goods on the outbound shipping area with this new technology”, says Mikkelborg. “Also we will get more control of the shipping process and with returns.”
RFID is beeing implmented in a clear future strategy where RFID will be part of the agreements with the producers of Bilglassgruppen’s items. The producers will be encouraged to tag at their end of the supply chain, so that the tag can really be utilized throughout the whole supply chain all the way towards the end users of the windshields and windows.
Sandve also says:
”We can put a RFID tag on the car glass that follows the window at all it’s lifetime. At returns by the consumer, one can inspect the process the window has gone through like the glue that has been used, and see if there is something that can explain why the window did not perform as expected.”
In the period of testing, there is established label printers, handheld scanners and portals for reading the RFID tags. The windows are followd all the way from good receiving via storing, picking and packaging, all the way to the shipping of customer packaged units of windows, glue, rubber sealings and plastic clips.
“The system reads up to 35 windows at a time and secures that the shipment is 100% correct when it leaves Bilglassgruppen’s storage facility”, Mikkelborg says.
“We do now get the results on analysis and test that we need, and will do a cost/benefit analysis to see if we can get the increase in efficiency that we expect. We also are looking at adjustments to our ERP system and other IT-systems. If there are more uncertanties after the pilot, we will find the necessary answers to get the “tags in place”. We will eventually make this happen”, says Managing Director Rune Sandve.
